Running a TTRPG session can be hard; anybody who’s ever done it knows that. But it doesn't have to be, which is why we added so much to this section. One of the biggest strengths of this style of game (PbtA) is its inherent flexibility and freedom, and we want this section to leverage those strengths and make Dungeon World 2 as easy and fun to run as possible.
While previous sections of these rules are in the style of an instruction manual, this one is more like a letter and toolbox from us, as designers, to you, the GM. You want to have great experiences at the table, and we want to help, so let's talk about what we think that means.
There are also lots of tools in this chapter, meant to help both in-the-moment improvisation and structured preparation. Please pick and choose which ones you want to use. While some may reference each other, they're mostly standalone in nature.
Thank you for running this game for your friends, family, or even strangers! We sincerely hope that everything you find here helps you to have the most enjoyment while orchestrating, encouraging, and growing your Players’ fun. Dungeon World 2 truly couldn’t exist without you!

The Role of the GM
Being a Game Master (GM) is an important part of the game, and it can be extremely fun and rewarding, but it can also be nerve-wracking when first starting out (or even after decades of experience). To help ease those pressures, here is our list of what a GM is and (more importantly) isn't responsible for:
- You are responsible for portraying the world around the PCs, such as the environment, NPCs, enemies, and obstacles all along the way.
- Your NPCs are NOT the protagonists. They can still be awesome, some can be around frequently, but their most memorable moments should draw the game's focus back to the PCs in some way.
- You are NOT responsible for everyone’s fun. This is a collaborative game, and everyone is equally responsible for being mature, kind, and respectful to each other.
- You are here to have fun too! Collaboration is a two-way street, so feel free to inject your ideas into the world, or suggest an idea to a Player (after asking if they are okay with you doing so, of course).
- You are NOT the “author of a story”. This is a shared game about an evolving conversation that creates something like a story ex post facto.
If you go in with a fixed “plot” in mind, then we assure you everything will become more difficult and less fun for everyone. Lean into the unexpected and let yourself be surprised. PLAY TO FIND OUT!
- You are NOT the organizer. It’s up to everyone in the group to decide how to handle things like session scheduling, group behavior, snacks, and what to do if someone is late or can’t make it. Don’t overburden yourself with these tasks, and learn to delegate them as much as possible.
- You are NOT infallible, so don’t sweat over the small stuff. If you make a mistake, or have trouble coming up with ideas, that’s okay. Feel free to ask for help from others in your gaming group, or outside of it.
Play Order Flowchart
This showcases what the flow of a game of Dungeon World 2 typically looks like, in more detailed fashion than in the Playing the Game section, and focused on the GM’s side of things.
- You as the GM make a Move. Following the game’s Principles, you set up a situation. Then you usually ask “What do you do?”
- Player(s) describe their response. Sometimes you or another Player might ask clarifying questions about this response, such as “What does it look like when you do that?” or “What do you want to accomplish?”
- Is a Move triggered? If so, proceed to #3. If not, go back to #1.
- Is there a roll involved? If not, resolve the Move and then go back to the start. If so, roll what the Move says. Freely remind the PCs they can Aɪᴅ each other. Also, remember that Conditions affect rolls.
- What was the roll’s result? Follow what the Move says happens.
- A 10 or higher (10+) means a full success, as close to clean as can be expected
- A 7, 8, or 9 (7-9) is still a success but messier, with a cost, drawback, or milder consequence
- A 6 or lower (6-) means things go badly. Most of the time that means the GM makes a Move and the rolling Player gains XP, but a few Moves say something else.
- What now? After every Move’s resolved you need to update the fiction to reflect the change that happened.
- Has any PC marked all Conditions or reached 0 HP? If so, they Reach Their Limit (for Conditions) or Face Death (if they reached 0 HP).
- Go back to #1!
