Crash Course in (Understanding & Using) Moves

A Move is a self-contained rule that defines what happens when a specific action is taken in the fiction. When a PC does something risky, dangerous, or tense, and the group needs to determine how it resolves, it often results in a Move triggering. As such, we recommend you familiarize yourselves with the Moves available, especially the Core Moves.

Triggering Moves

Many Moves start with “When you do X” to describe when they trigger (e.g. “When you scrutinize someone throughout a conversation…”), while others change or modify an existing Move (e.g. “When you Spout Lore, you may ignore the questions…”).

If a Move makes sense for the current situation, follow its text to resolve it. Sometimes Moves will say to roll dice plus a Stat, answer questions, or just make choices when following them. Once the Move is resolved, resume the conversation, incorporating any changes the Move made in the fiction.

Some Moves say “Once per session…” at the start. This means that the Move only happens the first time its trigger is fulfilled in each session. Most of these are limited on an individual basis so, If there are three PCs in the group, for example, each can trigger such a Move once.

Some Moves are available to all PCs; namely, the Core, Extra, and Campaign Moves. Other Moves are only available by choosing a certain Class, or a Path within a Class.

There is also a list of GM Moves, split up into Core and Class Moves, which work very differently from Player-facing Moves. Instead of triggering as a result of a specific action happening in the fiction, all GM Moves happen when the GM is compelled to add to the conversation following a set of guidelines divided into an Agenda and Principles that best fit the spirit of a Dungeon World 2 game.

It's usually fairly obvious, but when this game says "Move" and references a PC's actions and potential outcomes, it likely means a PC Move. If it references the GM's descriptions and reactions to a PC action, it probably means a GM Move.

Rolling Dice

Many Moves call for dice to be rolled to resolve them. When you roll, you do so with two six-sided dice (often referred to as “2d6”, or "dice" by non-TTRPG enthusiasts), and add the numbers together. You usually also add a Stat to the roll; so when a Move says “roll+STR” that means you roll 2d6 and add their numbers together—adding your Strength stat (which is shortened to STR)—for a total. For example: if you rolled a 4 and a 5, and your STR is -1, then your final result would be 8.

The only exception to this is when rolling for damage (or dmg), which is explained below.

Instead of rolling with a Stat, some Moves instead ask you questions about the narrative and change your roll depending on the answers, adding +1 for each “Yes”.

Move Results

  • Rolling a total of 10 or higher (10+) means you get what you want, or as close to it as feasible, while avoiding most of the consequences. This doesn't always mean a complete success—depending on the Move and choices—but it's still something to rejoice.
  • Rolling a total of 7, 8, or 9 (7-9) means you achieve what you want, but there’s a cost, consequence, or the effect is reduced or different from what was intended.
  • Rolling a total of 6 or lower (6-) means things don't go well, and you don't quite get what you want, or you get it if you pay an extreme cost or suffer a terrible consequence. In such cases often the GM will decide what happens.

The GM only rolls damage dice for the characters they portray (NPCs). If the PCs act to resolve a situation that involves, affects, or opposes an NPC, then it’s the PC’s Moves and rolls that will inform the success of the NPC's actions.

So, for example, if a PC Trades Blows with an NPC, depending on the result of the roll and the Player’s decisions, the NPC may inflict the dmg the GM rolled, max, or min, or the PC will have to mark a Condition, the NPC gets a fleeting opportunity, or the PC loses or breaks something.

In the case when a PC interacts with an NPC in a non-aggressive way, the NPC’s actions are determined by the parameters of the Move the PC triggers, such as information revealed by Sense Motive questions, or getting an NPC to act a certain way thanks to successfully Pulling their Strings.

Advantage and Disadvantage

Sometimes a PC might have Advantage (adv) or Disadvantage (dis) on a roll.

  • When you have adv, roll three dice (3d6) and ignore the lowest result, keeping the highest two.
  • When have dis, roll three dice (3d6) and ignore the highest result, keeping the lowest two.

For example, if you had adv on a roll and the dice came up as 2, 4, and 6, then you'd ignore the 2 and keep the 4 and 6, totalling 10. If you had dis on the same roll then you'd instead ignore the 6 and keep the 2 and 4, totalling 6.

adv and dis cancel each other out. For example, if you have two sources of adv and one of dis, you roll with adv.

You can never have more than 1 adv or dis total, so you never roll more than three dice (3d6).

Misses vs Failures

A roll of 6- is often called a miss and not a failure… and that’s intentional. Although most of the time a PC rolls a 6- they won’t get what they want—and thus, it’ll feel like a failure—that isn’t always the case.

For example, if a PC is trying to pick the lock of a door, a 6- may be interpreted by the GM as the PC successfully picking the lock… But finding 10 guards waiting for them on the other side.

A GM may choose to do this for a variety of reasons, but the important thing here is to keep in mind that a 6- should always propel the conversation forward, adding new elements to it, instead of bringing it to a stop.
